Provisional Government

Prince George Lvov

- first leader of government was Prince George Lvov after the abduction of Nicholas II
- very involved in the national government
- prior to ruling provisional government he felt that Russia needed to overthrow the Czar or they would be overthrown by the central powers
- resigned on July 8th 1917 because the people disagreed with his decision to not take Russia out of WWI


Alexander Kerenksky

- part of the Social Revolutionary Party
- editor of radical newspaper called "Burevestik"
- believed in the removal of Nicholas II
- named "Minister of Justice" of the provisional government
- proposed several reforms that would give people more basic freedoms
- Alexander Kerensky took over Lvov's place as leader of government when he resigned in 1917.
    - unwilling to end the war
    - proposed a summer offensive during the war
    - soldiers were not happy with this decision and many refused to fight
    - some soldiers went home and tried to take land from the nobility
